Pink Parfum Silk Chiffon Blouse

So this is my first make from the pile of fabric I got at the Sew Expo in Puyallup this year. The fabric is a silk chiffon, lovely but fiddly to work with. Usually. Fortunately for me, this project went on without a hitch. It was just a tad ravelly, but I pressed on rather quickly after cutting before it has the opportunity to go batty on me.

I started over the weekend (i think) and done with the sleeves (which was the last thing I inserted, after already hemming it) by noon.

I used my TNT/go to bodice pattern, and then used pattern McCall's M6648 for the collar part.

And I kinda "drafted" my own sleeves based on my other projects. I made a pleat on the top part of the sleeves instead perhaps gathering it to fit the armsyce, and it doesn't look good. Obviously, mix and match, trial and error style of designing is not working here. The sleeves looks silly with the pleat, because it is already a roomy type sleeve. It seems messy in the pics because I didn't iron the sleeves after sewing it in. Coz I will take the seam ripper to it and try a different way... Not looking forward to unpicking all those french seams...

I lined it with lining fabric that feels silky but most definitely a synthetic (I didn't check the label when purchasing it at Joann's). Nahh, it's not those shiny bemberg rayon ones, they don't have it in this pink color when I was there last...

I didn't line the sleeves.

Did you spot the mistake among my neat insides (albeit not too thin french seams)?

Because I wanted a neat inside finish, I had the bust darts sandwiched between the main blouse and the lining. Ugghh! If you look closely (in real life) you might be able to detect the lining's bust darts, although the prints kinda camouflaging it on the outside... I hope. (tiny phew) But hey, I'm telling you about it here, so you're bound to look at me closely... Well, just look at the french seams okay. I may or may not take the seam ripper to amend this. Most definitely not tonight.

Probably not even this week. Who knows. This is supposed to be my mother's day blouse. I planned to wear it with a white jeans, which I didn't have... but me and the Bean went to the thrift store today for a lil bit of last hurrah stashing before SarahLiz's 2013 Style the Stash Sew-a-long commences in June. She did say it's okay, LOL... But I was good. Just picked up a white jeans for me, 2 summer shirts for hubby, and one boucle looking fabric that I am going to practice my jacket sewing with, just as planned for the sew-a-long... I hope it has enough yardage...

Oh... have I told you that I didn't like how this blouse looks on me? All the hard work... and lovely cute fabric. I looked quite mumsy in it. I know it's mother's day blouse, and I am a mommy, but still... You know I like roomy blouse, but the part I don't like is the upper part, around the shoulder and neck. I am convinced that the style with the collar and the (roomy sleeves perhaps) makes me look like a top heavy triangle... I will wear it this weekend, and since it's Me-Made-May, I'll post the proof on Monday. :(

'twas sew much fun at the SewExpo!

It was my very first experience at the Sewing & Stitchery Expo ever, and it did not disappoint! I am so glad to be living near enough to attend this year. Hubby and Bean the toddler dropped a squealing me off that morning and went back home.

My jam-packed schedule (that I coordinated with my sewing meetup buddy, Amy) started with a quick ogle around the booth areas -there were so many people- and then I headed straight to the Simplicity fashion show at 9.30 a.m. where I was to meet up with my sewing meetup friend Sherry who saved me a seat at the front row with her daughter and friend! :) We were given a handout with a list of pattern numbers of the outfits to be modeled ahead of time which to an expo-newbie me thought a great idea! For me it was esp helpful to see the clothes on the runaway to find out the type of fabric used.

My favorite outfit though must be what the emcee was wearing! She (Debra Kreiling of Simplicity) made it herself based on Simplicity 1650, a project runway collection, princess cut bodice with peplum dress in black. She added a cuffed elbow length sleeves and it really complemented her petite and curvy self. It is always more inspirational when I see how other women made patterns work for them. I really like the princess bodice of this peplum, and the neckline, but preferred it to be a separate rather than a dress.

Caught up with Amy who sat a few rows behind us, we rushed out to find our first class in another building but not before first indulging ourselves in a scone for me and strawberry shortcake for Amy. The first class was a 1 needle ($5) seminar by Lorraine Henry on "What Comes First in Fit?"

... which is of course, measuring... Lorraine was quite funny :) and while I did jot some notes, I will have to sit down and revisit her handout again as she shared with us a condensed version of alteration procedures. I was quite excited by her two way tapes, and booklet Measuring Made Easy (at the end of the day, was able to stop by her booth and purchased a set to be delivered home as they ran out of a copy by then) which I can see will help me measure myself better. To be honest, I have been winging it with my measuring and pattern alterations a lot, so just seeing "live" what is meant by measuring high bust and so on was way much better for me than seeing it in books. I mean, now I can imagine stuff better when I see these explanation in books.

After the seminar, Amy and I stopped by the Vogue Fabrics booth before going into the 11.15 a.m. fashion show. I've purchased from them online before and very satisfied with what I got so was super excited to see they were at the expo (Hmm, now I am thinking if the Vogue Fabrics and Vogue patterns are the same company. Are they? Somehow I didn't think so all these while...Anyways, lots of fabric were purchased by me at Vogue Fabrics in 2 separate ocassion, although I can't recall now when in the day the first set of purchases were made)

The fashion show (Fashion Trends & Sewing Tips for 2013 Vogue, Butterick, McCall's & Kwik Sew Patterns) was hosted by Pati Palmer, and one of the models was Marta Alto. Yes! It is kind of funny that I was so excited to see them on the stage. :) One of the patterns I like most was M6601 print silk blouse made and modeled by Marta. And I kinda like the red wool crepe V1327 neck twist dress by Anne Klein, but probably interpret it into a sleeved blouse than a dress with those waist seamed pleated skirt that doesn't suit me.

Next class at 12.30 was another one needle seminar: Thread Therapy with Dr. Bob (Bob Purcell of Superior Threads). Very very informative. He gave us quite a few pages of notes to take home! Too bad I didn't get to find his booth. But, here's what I got:
I am certified, y'all. Hehe.

Didn't get to shop during lunch... We bumped into our sewing meetup fearless leader :), and then Amy and I grabbed lunch. Then, while our sewing meetup group met somewhere to catch up around the grounds, we marched on to our 3 needle class "Embeadery" on Fabric.

Here is Amy with our instructor, Cindy Rowell.

I enjoyed the introductory class immensely. We get to actually work on a mini project (picture below is of our kit, supplied by Cindy), so it's quite hands on.

Amy and I left just a little bit earlier to get to our last seminar of the day at 4.30pm at another building. The seminar, Tissue Issues by Peggy Sagers of Silhoette Patterns, must be my most favorite class of the day. There was just something about her way of talking and explaining that just resonated with me. She seems like a no-nonsense kinda lady, but yet not in an intimidating kind of way and came across as very genuinely wanting us to achieve what we wanted. It was too short a session IMO, but it was only a one needle class anyways. Since then, I have watched a couple of her past webcasts. If you want to catch her LIVE webcasts on myriad of sewing related issues, she goes on air every alternate Monday nights starting at 8pm CST where you can have live Q&A too. Lucky for me, they will post these videos online on her Silhoette Patterns website.

Oh, at each of these classes there were lucky draws, and my ticket numbers came close a few times, but as usual, not lucky enough compared to Amy ;). We split up at the booths, and I guess we had about 30-40 minutes to shop before the expo ends for the day.

On to my loot:
Must have been my first purchase of the day, in the morning. Quilt template and chalk marker at the Clover booth, with free measuring tape. :)

Fabric love:
From the 2.5 yds remnants section of Vogue Fabrics L-R: Black, Black with white and red print Silk chiffon, orangey rust silk chiffon, green with orange, red and cream swirls silk twill?, another silk twill and a black with small prints thin silk charmuese (which I might make into M6601 like Marta once I get the pattern).

Knits L-R: 2 yds of yummy orange knit from Marcy Tilton's booth (last purchase just as they were closing up shop. I wished I had more time to look at their fabric or attend their seminars/fashion show.), and 2 more pieces from Vogue Fabrics a designer poly-lycra crepe in cobalt blue (3yds),  and another knit which i can't recall but I like the colors a lot (i can't remember, it could be 3 yds or 5 yds).

First fabric purchase of the day from Vogue Fabrics L-R: 2 silk chiffons and a silk twill (all 2 yards).

I also  purchased some patterns from Silhoette Patterns (they had a buy 3 and get 4th free package):

Two very achy but satisfied SewExpo attendees:

p/s: I was wearing my red wool knit V1179 and lugging a HUGE zippered tote bag I made the day before from thrifted a panel of woven curtain (yet to be posted).

Thoughts: I wished I had more time to go around the booths. I didn't even take any time to visit quilt related booths as promised to my mom, and must have missed out on some deals on quilting fabric and infos. Hubby offered to take me the next day, but I thought 4 hours total of driving on Saturday (send, home, pickup, home) for him and the Bean were a bit much, plus I had tonnes of quilting fabric in my stash (90% were thrifted in Iowa) that should be sewn up first.

Maybe it is only my first time at a sewing expo, or maybe because this is the biggest (or one of) sewing expos here in the US, I didn't feel like it is overwhelmingly catering only for quilts and crafts. There were quite satisfying a number of booths and classes that are for apparel sewing enthusiasts IMO, and I hope next year there will be even more. Amy and I are already planning for a 2 day participation next year, with a probable hotel stay nearby where the hubby and Bean can hang.

Birthday Reflection

It was my birthday yesterday. I felt and look my age and more but it's okay. All the late nights, early mornings and sometimes no sleeping and of course poor diet and no exercise are catching up on me at just 33. :) I have my family, and for that I am ever so thankful.

I noticed a huge improvement within me now compared to when I first started sewing. I am happier to have a creative outlet, and that I, a horrid procrastinator, nurturing and immersing myself in this hobby. I am even happier to have found a community, albeit an online one, one from a distant, that I am learning and drawing inspiration from.

I think nobody is happier than my husband that I am sewing and excited to be making beautiful things for myself. That I am learning and be rejuvenated by that. And as a birthday surprise, he got me my very first dress form!!!! Very sneaky! The best birthday gift ever, IMO, next to the machine he got me a few years back.

I don't really know how to use the dress form yet - it will make a fantastic way to showcase my finished projects though than just on a hanger. But eventually I will get there. Just like with my sewing machine.

--------------> me with my new Singer dress form

And so my journey, sewing and growing, continues...

V1179 - Silk Jersey

Finally, after making 3 versions of V1179 (one is as the pattern picture- kinda a wearable muslin, one I added my tapered sleeves and a deeper cowl, and one i cut into a top rather than a dress and with slimmer sleeves) I made this pattern in THE fabric I've put aside for it one fine day...

Construction:
For this version of V1179, I made it sleeveless like the pattern shows.
I just hemmed about 1.5 inches though instead of the 4 inches indicated by the instruction.
Another change in the construction is the way I sew in the cowl collar. The instruction tells you to stitch the notched side of collar first then turn the other side in and then stitch on the right side. I didn't like the look of this on my first version that I decided to hand sew this down on the inside after stitching the notched side of collar onto the dress. This way it looks neater on the outside. I did this on all my previous versions, and is especially important for me on this silk jersey version.

Fabric:
Green block (as described) silk jersey purchased on FabricMart long time ago. Upon inspecting the selvage print when pinning the patterns, it is designed by Cynthia Steffe, and printed by Angel textile? Something like that. The colors are lime green, chartreuse and black.

(p/s: FabricMart is having their Mother's Day sale. 20% off entire website until Monday May 14th.)

One thing I notice when putting this on is that:
1) Silk jersey feels so luxurious to wear
2) It clings on to your body - very unforgiving

So, if you have a woman's body and have to squeeze into your Spanx before putting your silk jersey dresses on, will it still feel buttery soft to wear? Or a slip? What do you think?

Let the fun begin...

Today is May 1st and the start of the Me-Made-May '12...

I signed up not too long ago to challenge myself. So I've made a few clothes for moi since I started sewing. yay. But I don't think they are enough for me to cover the whole month yet without repetition (and perhaps not season appropriate, but where I come from that doesn't matter at all, hehehe). I also haven't made (from scratch or a refashion) any type of bottoms, with the exception of the pyjama pants finished last Friday. I think I can squeeze that in though, don't you think, :) especially since I practically live in PJs and not featuring it will be a gross misrepresentation of my daily life.

I've rarely if ever posted photo of myself on this blog. I sew and then I post. Mostly on hangers. Nowadays it's a miracle that I find a photo of me that I like. Ok, maybe not just nowadays, but since forever. I always have weird expressions or funky hand movements in photos. Now I can also add extra chubby cheeks and wobbly bits to the list. Once a while the stars align and I'd get a nice photo. But its kinda random, nothing that I can recreate (coz well I don't take pics of myself... and I still haven't purchase that tripod...).

Today I spent the whole day at home and did not go out. We'll have people over tomorrow, so I spent the day cutting fabric for my sewing project, entertaining the Bean, cooking and doing chores among other stuff. I don't like cleaning very much, but washing dishes can be therapeutic.

Day 1 -  I wore my first Vogue 1179 dress blogged here. Wrap cardigan is not me made but is a few years old and brings out the blue in the dress.

To recap my challenge pledge:

'I, Far of Memoryseed (http://farsland.blogspot.com), sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May '12. I endeavor to wear at least ONE item of me-made clothing/accessories each day for the duration of May 2012'...

I will be posting my MMM'12 pics every Monday here and daily on Flickr.

Happy MMM'12 to those participating!

Me-Made-May '12

Zoe, of 'So Zo... What do you know' blog is hosting her famous self-stitched/me-made challenge this coming May. I first stumbled across this sometime last year when I was dreaming about sewing my own clothes but didn't have the nerve and the time to learn.

Photobucket

Fast forward to April 2012, I have quite a few self made clothing item on heavy rotation. In fact I mostly wear what I made now (that they are in tatters) and have donated a lot of RTWs I have. My relationship with the things I made, hmmm... it's almost (but not quite) like giving birth to my son. A proud mama. Flaws and all. But then again, I do have things I wear more often than the others. So it is also the time to evaluate them...

People stumbling on my blog page will be bored to tears seeing the same few things on my back but I still decided that this is the time to participate! As Zoe said, this is a challenge to ENCOURAGE people like us who make things for themselves. To do what exactly? Well, from my understanding, it's totally up to us how we want to challenge ourselves.. So...

'I, Far of Memoryseed (http://farsland.blogspot.com), sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May '12. I endeavor to wear at least ONE item of me-made clothing/accessories each day for the duration of May 2012'...

When I think about it, I mainly sew the things up, but for the most part haven't taken picture of me in them or style them. This is a very cut and dry variety of blogs. After all, this blog is in existence to document what I make. Isn't this one challenge to take on, then? At least for May. Take pics of me in my things. (which is a huge problem. me and hubby take crappy pics. :( must get that tripod for camera ) Don't think I will be posting them everyday tho, but in weekly clusters... in May...

As I said, I have only a few items so far, and I just made tops/dresses. Same with my refashions. Thankfully self made accessories will be counted in, so there is a little variety thrown in there. Hmmm... okay, am also challenging myself to make at least one bottom (pants or skirt) by end of May. It is part of my 2012 sewing plan anyways, and I badly need them, so while I'm in the spirit of encouraging myself to take this on, why not ehh?

May is also my birth month - I am going to make a birthday outfit definitely, so that is adding another new item to wear for May :)

In case anybody reading this want to better read what it is all about, join in the challenge or see what the others are doing for their MMMay'12, go to Zoe's blog. I'm sure more details on what to do, where to go and so on will be posted come May 1st. :)

V1179: take 3

This is my 3rd top for the SATT-2012 challenge. I've made this pattern (Vogue 1179) twice before, and I think this is one of my favorite patterns so far. Maybe because I like the neckline and shape and it gave me the least trouble when adjusting pattern (because indeed the shape is roomy, hence forgiving...) Easy means you wanna make more, and the more you make the faster it comes together no? :)

For this version I just added long sleeves (like 2nd version), and shortened the length to upper part of the hip on me.
The fabric I got from FabricMart and I love it. It's still for sale on their website for cheap on clearance!

The features that I love about this pattern: cowl neck and pleated front:

The pattern instruction tells you to stitch in the ditch (the cowl neck), but I usually handstitch it down on the inside so that messiness will not show on the outside...
---

This week is my wedding anniversary week. I will need to sew me a dress to celebrate, so I will have to take a pause on the challenge which ends on the 15th! But I reached my target of 3, so I'm happy with that, but I have a lotttt of tops I have in my mind that I want to make...

I haven't decided what to do yet... I know I am not going to use the brocade-y eggplant fabric I first earmarked for the anniversary dress - I think it is not season appropriate... So, do I make another V1179 dress in a silk jersey print fabric I've been holding on to, knowing that it will be faster to put together? Or do I make a summery cotton dress which means hassling with pattern adjustment and I might not finish in time for the day but probably get done by the weekend when we will go out for our family anniversary dinner (or not)?

We'll see...

Draped front neckline top

I bought the above Donna Karan Collection pattern Vogue 1282 during the recent March BMV sale. I love the drapey-ness of the neckline so I figured I will give it a try for my Starting at the Top-2012 challenge top #2.

I got this purple jersey fabric as part of my mystery bundle from my FabricMart purchase. Don't you just love mystery bundles? Hehehe... I love them!

V1282 is not really a difficult pattern to follow since there's only 3 pattern pieces for the top, and of the 3, 2 must be taped together to make one large bodice piece, and the last pattern piece is for armhole facing.

This pattern i think is quite similar to the popular V1250 which I tried once using a wearable muslin but was not too successful (my blog post of V1250 here).

My mistake was that I wanted a deeper drape on the neckline so I added to it but it causes the folds over the tummy to be quite bad which is not an effect that I wanted of course.

I haven't gone back to make pattern adjustments and a redo of the dress as I planned, but I suspect I will one of these days :)

So here is a picture of the completed top:

What I like about this top as I said is the drapey-ness of the neckline. More so than V1250 :) I do have to sew up the neckline even higher than the pattern indicated (for me by 3.5 inches), I think I've read reviews by other sewists that also noted that they did this. I also found that the armhole is very very low (you can see hmmm the side boob? You can see it also on the model on the pattern sleeves picture on top of this post), which means for me that without a cover-up I might not wear this.... (Not that I wear sleeveless top comfortably without anything covering me no matter the temperature... ) But under a jacket or cardigan I think this top is fine.

Note for me: Also to take off 1" off both top of center back seams and taper down...

Spring Gingham Peplum-ed Blouse

I am participating in the Starting at the Top 2012 challenge and my brain is swarming with ideas and well..... the desire to make this and that top, lots and lots of them - in other words, I am finding it difficult to decide. :)
I also do not have a TNT (tried and true) pattern yet, other than the Sorbetto, so instead of cranking up sewing one after another, I had to also use the challenge time to make adjustments to my patterns of choice (starting today......).

My very first top for the challenge is a refashion project from a thrifted man's checked/gingham shirt to a blouse with what I intend to be peplum:

The blouse has a princess seam on the front, darts on the back, and short sleeves. I binded the neck and the sleeves with white fabric which is remnant from a previous project (also thrifted fabric). I used the button parts on the back (changed the original buttons to lovely thrifted pearl buttons) and left the pocket as it is instead of ripping it out so that I won't have tiny holes there.

This top is based on the pattern McCall's M6518 that I made previously for Valentine's.
I left out the midriff portion and fashioned the bottom part of the original shirt into a peplum for my new blouse. I shouldn't have left out the midriff band I think :) With the midriff band I think the blouse would've look more like the peplum blouse in my head.

I do love this new blouse though. I think it's cute, it's spring-summer appropriate, but I think I can still work on the design part to make it a better peplum blouse.... Maybe the next one will be in eyelet cotton fabric I thrifted, or fabric with prints. Or both? :)

For full disclosure let me tell you that I initially made this top too small (because I wanted to start on this top ASAP and forgot my notes on the adjustments I made to the red dress, so I just directly cut the pattern to a 14...).

Seems like my shoulder is smaller like a 12, my bust & back will be 16 and my waist is a whole another matter! Not that I know this as a fact, this is more of a guestimate. Hell, that's how I always end up needing to make adjustments :)

Starting at the Top Challenge: Spring/Summer Creations

Faye of Faye's Sewing Adventure is hosting a Top Challenge from April 1s1 - 15th. I'm joining in as I don't have enough top to wear that's spring/summer friendly!

What I need to do for the challenge are:
• Choose my fabrics,
• Choose my top or blouse patterns,
- add a new twist to a TNT pattern,
- refashion,
- or maybe even self draft a new design

There are no quotas & no limits!
And that's what I like best about it! I aim to make 3 but if I can only make 1 I won't beat myself up about that... (coz i am usually super slowww).

Tomorrow (March 31st) is the last day to sign up for the challenge. If you would like to join us or to see what kind of tops the participants come out with, visit Faye's page for instructions and link.

Not one, not two but three!

This is my 3rd version of the same pattern McCall's M6513 (view D) made one after another in the same month at that - I am that boring.

The first version I used this very soft trendy knit which is a dream to wear but extremely roomy and comfy. For the second version I used a stabler knit, a ponte knit. I like it very much and it fits great, but realized that it's kinda thick and warm for spring/summer. For this 3rd version I am using an ITY knit, leopard print I purchased from Gorgeous Fabrics. The fabric is slinky-ish but stabler than the first version, but lesser so than the second version. The suggested fabric is "moderate stretch knits only". Since I'm a novice I have no idea what that means exactly. All 3 fabrics I used have different feel, stretch amount and so on.

The instructions were easy enough to follow IMO. However I remember making one thing specifically different. I hand-stitched down the back neck facing inside rather than machine stitch it from the right side, and it's much neater (I did as instructed for the first version, but ends up unpicking the seams because it looks too wonky for me). Perhaps others can make it neater that way, but not me...

Here are the pics:

Cherry Wine Faux Wrap Top

This is my version 2 of McCall's M6513. Version one was too loose but thanks to the fabric, ohhh sooo comfy. But alas, I see it's gonna be an at-home lounging top now but it's okay. (Project post here.)

The photos are horrendous - I took the pics using camera phone in a too bright room...

Version 3 is being hemmed as we speak (what I meant is in-between chores and chasing after the Bean).

Faux wrap knit top, version #1

I got the "trendy knit rose florette" fabric on sale from Fabric Mart some time last year and finally found a pattern that I wanted to try out: McCall's M6513, View D (In picture of pattern sleeve is the light blue top but with long sleeves).

The pattern being by Palmer/Pletsch includes tutorials on fitting, which I of course have a problem with... Even with pictorial instructions I still managed to end up with a bigger top which doesn't fit well :) I cut a size 16 for shoulders and then to 22 towards my hips (AND ON TOP OF THAT ADDED AN INCH THROUGH THE MIDDLE TOO!!!). I don't have a size 22 hips, but I was imagining that this will better fit my mommy tummy... (I always seem to approach fit more like an experiment... and then forget about the ingredients afterwards...)

While on paper pattern I felt that this might be okay, upon basting the fabrics together realized that it was too big, so I sew a 1.5" seam. And it is still fitting poorly IMO. It was a bit big on the shoulder for my liking, and then loose under the armpits and on my back (like butterfly). Oh, and of course I knew this beforehand but somehow still manage to miss it: pattern placement on print fabrics... As you can see, a huge rose florette is highlighting my worse area: tummy! Uggh! In this picture it is not that terrible, but it is cringe-worthy in other pics.

It wasn't loose around the bust area simply because the front pieces crossed each other giving a nice snug look in the area.

I am not sure what material this fabric is, maybe rayon polyester, or rayon jersey? It is very very soft and very comfortable to wear. However I think this is a 4 way stretch type fabric, so eventhough I added stabilizers (as recommended) on the shoulders and at the side gathers, I feel that this top will expand even more over time. And that since the front part are 2 pieces of fabric crossed and sewn together on the sides (faux wrap) and the sewn to a 1 piece back fabric, the front is heavier and so it pulls the top to the front (because this fabric is so soft and maybe less stable?). The pattern does recommend stabler knits.

This top is not a home run for me because of the too loose fit and the type of stretch of the fabric I used (but I still love the fabric, sooo silky soft, but it is already pilling after wearing it out to the mall with a handbag across my body...) I am not about to ditch the pattern - the neckline and the look I love. I think rather than move on to the other stuff, I will make more of this top to get the best fit for me. I've already made adjustments on the pattern, and planning to make it with a cherry wine colored ponte knit fabric I have (pic below, on the left, from Fabric Mart).

If and only if I get a satisfying fit, I will make another version using the leopard print ITY jersey pictured above (bought from Gorgeous Fabrics)...
